I think I need a change of plans

Thinking that with all these square blocks, the border needed something curvy like feathers, I looked through my templates. Of course, there was nothing that would work on a four-inch strip ...
... so, I drafted out a pattern and cut a template from plastic.
The plan was, to start in the corners and work to the center of each border.

After quilting  the first corner, I am thinking a whole border of feathers would be a big waste of time.
This batik is better than camouflage for hiding stitches.

I think I may go back to my stencil collection and join the corner feathers with a cable ... maybe putting one of these feather designs at the center of each side ... if the cables don't link up neatly.
I sure don't want to start un-stitching what is already in place.

The next four days are going to be super-busy with a juggling of schedules ... scouting stuff ... school stuff ... choir stuff ... and feeding these silkworms who managed to gobble up a dozen large leaves by the time I had finished my first cup of coffee.
I read all the busy stuff my blogging friends are getting done and wonder how they do it! Am I missing something?

  1. I just finished ripping out machine quilting, so, yes, to the cable, and no to ripping any of your stitches out.

  2. One reason I don't use a machine is because I would spend more time ripping than sewing.

  3. Your quilting is beautiful and I do love hand quilting, wish I had more time but I think I need to practice my machine skills, I do have a long arm. I do some by hand, but just basic stitching, could never get the hang of the thimble method.

    1. I think there are varying degrees of quilting wether by hand or by machine. I have seen some really awesome machine quilting and always admire anyone who can make a machine behave so wonderfully well.

  4. It's difficult to find a quilting pattern that does not disappear in the print of the fabric.
Don't rip anything out; your original design is very elegant, just add a cable to join the corners.

    1. I should have realised that batik might hide the stitches. I'm still glad I chose it and I think I have a home-made stencil that will work in combination.

  5. I am loving this quilt, Julie. The border fabric is fabulous. Yes join the feathers to a cable. I certainly would not rip out your feathers; I think they look great

    1. I really like that border fabric too. I should have realised it would hids the stitches, at least for a fancy feather design... I'm sure I have a cable stencil that will work.

  6. It is surprising how easily stitches can hide. Mind you, this does not happen when you want them to. Good luck finding the right stencil.

    1. How true, and if only those points that don't meet exactly might hide too.... My librarian mind works well when all I have to do is check my stencil file. If only other stuff in my life was as easy to file...

  7. Yes, it would be a shame not to be able to see all the detailed quilting... I’m amazed at how quickly this quilt is coming together!

    1. Well, the week in the woods and follow-up catching up with things has slowed it all to a halt. Hopefully there will be a bit of time to get back to it by Friday when my quilt group meets.
